Sundays in France are good for Brocantes, antique fairs and you will usually find one somewhere in your area whilst on holiday. Here in our area of the Loire valley we have one in Montreuil Bellay on the first Sunday, Montsoreau on the second Sunday, Chinon on the third Sunday and Saumur on the fourth Sunday ie last Sunday. We ventured into town quite late in the morning/lunchtime and strolled around on a lovely sunny day amongst the stalls. As it was lunchtime the stall holders were enjoying their lunch with a glass of wine of course. When we have guests staying we always give them a 'what's on' note for the week and so inevitably we meet them at the fairs. On Sunday it was John and Pauline from all the way from Australia, and Paul and Lauren (and Tuna) from UK here in the pic taking it easy at a street café enjoying a coffee in the sunshine. Paul likes his wines and enjoyed our complimentary bottle of Domaine deL'Enchantoir Saumur rouge. John and Pauline too enjoyed our wines the Saumur rouge and blanc from Enchantoir and a Chardonnay IGP from Chateau de Brossay. These wines are available from us at www.gfwine.co.uk. Have a look at our selection of wines from all over France. Life in France moves along at a leisurely pace so its ideal if you looking for a break from your hectic schedule to take it easy and enjoy some downtime why not come over for a wine tour and combine it with some sightseeing

A great start to the day weatherwise to our one day wine tour in the Loire valley. It was a bright sunny morning when we welcomed our guests Ken and Samantha from Colorado to beautiful Manoir de Gourin. Over coffee and croissants our introductory talk on the Loire wine region covered the main appellation areas, grape varieties and wine styles. We also talked about the wine making processes of the different wines and finally some of the main elements of the quality system that defines each of the individual appellations. Our morning visit was to an Anjou vineyard to visit the vineyard, chai and wine room finishing with a tasting of ten of the chateau wines. Anjou blanc and rouge, Anjou Village, Cabernet d'Anjou, Rose de Loire, Cremant de Loire, Mousseux rouge, and three styles of sweet Coteaux du Layon.

Lunch was in the wine room at Manoir de Gourin. Karin prepared a quiche lorraine and salad starter, salmon with gratin dauphinois, green beans and caper sauce, french orange tart and rhubarb, and finally a selection of cheeses. The wines were a Muscadet and a Saumur Champigny.

Our afternoon tour was to a Saumur vineyard. The weather got rather wet and we took a quick tour of the vineyard with the chenin blanc vines. The pic of Ken and Samantha was taken in the rain! We took in the chai, wine room, cave callars and the tasting the domaine wines which gave us a good chance to compare the subtle differences between the Anjou and Saumur wines. So we tasted Saumur blanc and rouge, Saumur Puy Notre Dame, a Saumur oaked Chenin, Cabernet d'Anjou and Cabernet de Saumur, Saumur mousseux and a rouge mousseux. So similar wines from each area but very different in taste. Including the lunch wines we tasted 22 wines which covered the areas of Anjou and Saumur. A great day out. Samantha's comment at the end was 'had a lovely time on the wine tour. Thank you so much' You can't say more than that.

You may remember an evening recently that involved not just some wine tasting (Ok drinking) and a game of Maj Jong. Well it continues apace and we have enjoyed a further evening that I am happy to inform you all I won a game of the said Maj Jong. Our wines were from Bordeaux and I am at a loss to remember what they were so please forgive me.

Thats just some baloney about our wine tours but it demonstrates the sort of fun and enjoyment that you can have when you book a wine tour with us at loirewinetours.com. loirewinetoursblog – new domaine visit

We made a visit today to a new domaine in Anjou country. New to us I mean. We heard about it from our friends Peter and Maggie. Then coincidentally we all went out a week ago to a restaurant in Neuil sur Layon near us and they had a wine on the wine list from the domaine which we all tried and rated very highly. Its an Anjou Village AOC from Domaine du Petit Clocher in a village near us called Cléré-sur-Layon. It is run by the Denis family Jean-Noel, Vincent, Julien and Stephane.

We tasted reds of Anjou and Anjou village AOC, Whites of Chardonnay VDP and Anjou AOC, Pinks of Rose de Loire and Cabernet d'Anjou, sparkling white Cremant de Loire and a pink sparkling, and a selection of Sweet Coteaux du Layon.

All perfectly good wines and we purchased the very good Anjou Village. Peter also liked the same and our other taster John was partial to the Anjou rouge and Chardonnay.

All in all good fun and enjoyable. If you fancy some of the same why not come out on a wine tour with us.

We finished up at Cléré Quarry as Peter was after some gravel. Cheers.

A great day out today on a tour in Saumur appellation country with Vanessa and Andrew. The weather stayed dry and we spent some time in the vineyards. First in a parcel of Chenin blanc used by the domaine to make two different cuveés. One a traditional Saumur blanc fermented and aged in old concrete vats and the second aged in old bordeaux oak barrels for 18 months in the estate cellars deep beneath the house. This first parcel has thirty year old vines ravaged by Esca so there are a few gaps where the vines have died. Then we moved on to a parel of Saumur Puy Notre Dame at the top of the home field where the soils are pure limestone (tuffeau). Here the cabernet franc vines have budded and the first signs of bunch growth is now visible. The vines have only recently been bent and tied to the lower wires.

We came down to the chai and we talked through the wine making processes for the estate whites, pinks and reds. The pinks here are made using the pressed method of leaving the berries in the trailer outside for a few hours to gain some colour before pressing and then into the vats for fermentation to begin.

After a visit to see the barrel wines in the cellar we then tasted our way through the wines of the estate. Andrew and Vanessa were both amazed at the quality of the wines and came away with six cases to take back home to the UK.

So why not come and take in the experience of a wine tour with us. Its great fun and very informative. Cheers.

Yesterday we toured in Saumur country in the Loire valley with two guests Amber and David. We spent the early afternoon with an introduction to the Loire vallley wine from Muscadet to Sancerre and all between. We tasted an Anjou rouge from 2005 to see how it has developed in the eight years and surprisingly the fruit remains albeit with a development to compoted fruitiness and some complex flavours. After the talk we visited a Saumur vineyard and inspected the Chenin blanc and Cabernet France vines. They are both starting the process budding. There is some effect from the cold wet weather with some bud deformation but generally the vines have developed well.

We visited the wine room and then tasted the full range of wines from the Saumur blanc, Suamur rouge, Saumur Puy Notre Dame, the oaked cuveés of the Blanc and rouge, the Cabernet d'Anjou and Cabernet de Saumur pinks, and finally the white, pink and red sparklings. A real treat. An enjoyable day out with Amber and David with wine maker Pierre and his wife Brigitte.

Cheers.

Our one day wine tours from Paris are proving popular and after April and Sam's tour with us we will be welcoming more guests from across the pond.

Our one day tours start at Angers where we welcome our guests off the TGV from Paris just 90 minutes away. A very good relaxing way of getting to the heart of the Loire valley if you are staying in Paris.

Our first port of call to get our guests in the mood of the Loire valley is just a stroll to the chateau of Angers. A real fortress that has been at the heart of French and English history for five centuries. You may remember the plantagenet kings of England Henry II and Richard I 'The Lionheart' from the family of the Anjou empire. You are able to dig deep into the history of the french counts of Anjou through the Apocalypse tapestry and the displays during your visit to the chateau.

Afterwards we travel to the heart of Anjou wine country to visit a chateau domaine to sample the wines and to learn about the different wine styles of the area from the traditional dry Anjou reds and whites, the medium and dry pinks, the sparkling wines and the famous sweet chenin wines of Coteaux du Layon, Layon Village, and Chaume. A real treat that takes in the vineyards, wineroom and a lunch in the Barrel room where the wines age slowly in old french oak barrels.

After lunch with the estate wines we travel a short distance to the Chateau of Brissac with its very unusual architecture. It is actually partly demolished and partly rebuilt and at the junction between the two is a chasm of dischord! You will enjoy the interior spaces and the lovely park outside along the Aubance river. The chateau  also makes its own wine so you are able to enjoy a tasting of the Anjou Village reds, and the pink dry Rose de Loire and medium pink Cabernet d'Anjou appellations.

After all that its back to Angers from your train back to Paris. Bon Voyage!

Cheers.
