lunch on the terrace of Manoir de Gourin

Loirewinetoursblog loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

Liz and Tom, and  Kate and Dug returned from an extremely strenuous morning at the estate of Enchantoir ready for lunch.  Ten wines tasted and analysed for flavours and food pairing. So very hard to do!  Karin prepared for us all a most scrumptious lunch. Starter was freshly picked Charente melon from the Vendee with local cured ham and our fresh garden mint. Main was a pan fried salmon with our own garden chard, beans and potatoes. All healthy and natural. Cheese followed and the dessert was fresh garden raspberries, meringue and ice cream. Lovely. Thanks Karin. Wine was a classic chenin with the melon, Cabernet de Saumur with the main and Saumur rouge classic with the cheese. What a meal and nobody wanted to move so a late start to the afternoon. Well we are in France are we not so lest see what happens.

Why not do the wine tour with us and experience our wines first hand with the winemaker. Its the only way to find wines of provenance. These are top quality natural wines. Go to www.loirewinetours.com and see what we have to offer our wine lovers.

loirewinetoursblog – a new vintage takes shape.

 Loirewinetoursblog Loirewinetoursblog Loirewinetoursblog

Loirewinetoursblog loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

An interesting afternoon spent at Domaine de L'Enchantoir  with the blending of the oak aged Saumur Puy Notre Dame. In 2011 the red Cabernet Franc was fermented and macerated for the Saumur Puy Notre Dame appellation wine. A part of this wine was stored in 8000 litre concrete vats for two years for the classic cuveé whilst 3300 litres was stored and aged in old Bordeaux barrels of 225 and 425 litres also for two years down in the old cellars below the house for a separate cuveé. Today the winemaker Pierre Van Den Boom was emptying the barrels into a vat to blend the wine prior to bottling. Then the pressed juice from that vintage was considered as an addition to the cuveé so Pierre made up three different blends. The first being just the blended wines from the barrels, the second with the addition of 5% pressed juice and the  third with 10% of pressed juice. Brigitte his wife has the best palate so she tasted the three samples and decided on the 10% pressed juice addition. I tasted and  agreed it added a more complex and rounded tannic taste and was distinct difference from the classic Puy Notre Dame cuveé.

pruning the vines of Chenin Blanc in Saumur appellation

Loirewinetoursblog loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

So a good grounding in some basic facts of the wines of the Loire valley. Actually its not so complex if you look at the appellations and grape varietals. Just three whites. Melon in Muscadet, Chenin in Anjou, Saumur, Chinon, Vouvray and Montlouis, and Sauvignon in Touriane and Sancerre, (plus Chardonnay for sparkling) and just one main red Cabernet Franc. Yes I know we have Pinot Noir in Sancerre and Gamay in Anjou and Malbec in Touraine and so on.  I know there are nuances but this gives someone the bare facts that will be sufficient when studying a wine list or a wine shop shelf for style and grape variety.

So Liz and Tom, and Kate and Dug enjoyed a morning in Saumur Country. That's Chenin for white, Cabernet for pink and red. You don't need to know any more on grape variety. Styles yes dry and fresh, demi sec and sweet whites, demi-sec and sec pinks, fruity reds with some oak ageing, sparkling Saumur and Cremant, white ,pink and reds (VMQ). Easy.

loirewinetoursblog – start your wine tour with some understanding of Loire wines. Yes?

A beautiful sunny day started in the wineroom at Manoir de Gourin for our four guests Liz and Tom, and Dug and Kate, with a talk on the wines of the Loire valley. Our talk is just to give guests a brief understanding of the styles of wines and some background on grape variety and tasting. This we accomplished whilst enjoying a cup of tea (very English) and some homemade crispy biscuits. Yummy. Thence we ventured off out into the world of vineyards, winerooms, cellars and tasting rooms. What better way, I ask, to spend a day in your hectic life?

loirewinetoursblog – just the job for a relaxing evening

Time for a relaxing evening with friends. We spent a very enjoyable evening with our hosts Gordon and Nicki at a little village not far from us. They have a lovely old French house and a great outdoor space for an evening with friends enjoying supper, good wine and friendly company.

The food was really lovely and tasty with a tomato grilled with a cheesy/herb topping starter, BBQ pork fillet with pasta and lettuce, cheese and a lovely concoction of fruit and crème fraiche mixed into a delicious pudding. We were blessed with the presence of the owners of Domaine Enchantoir at Chavannes Pierre and Brigitte so of course it had to be their wines. The white the oak aged Chenin Saumur and the red the oak aged Cabernet franc Saumur Puy Notre Dame village appellation. A good choice Gordon.

A pleasant late afternoon sundowner was called for to celebrate our six intrepid guests staying two weeks at Manoir de Gourin. Unusual to have so many and a pleasure to see them all enjoying their stay at Manoir de Gourin. So in the pic Dave and Moira, Casper and Kim, Colin and Yvonne having enjoyed our pink bubbly Saumur. I did manage to sneak into the pic. Its so fruity and you will never want to drink a champagne again. So bland. Have a look at our bubblies on our wine retail website www.gfwine.co.uk. Now that's a proper fizz! You can join our gfwine club and enjoy the real benefits of provenance and quality at a decent price. Log on.

loirewinetoursblog – Chinon tasting

A jolly excursion to the depths of Chinon appellation. On the east side that which is dominated by the tuffeau limestone that outcrops along the north bank of the Vienne river from Chinon to the east. There are two distinct areas of Chinon wine one to the west of the town where the soils are more a mix of alluvial and tuffeau being on the point of the land that stands between the Loire to the north and the Vienna river to the south. Our little trip was to a small 5 hectare estate run by husband and wife team Patrick and Nadia Lambert. They work their cabernet franc vines carefully to produce a bone dry rosé and three styles of red. Cuveé 'Les Deuxelles' named after the fact that both Nadia's maiden name and Patrick both begin with an L! This is a straight forward fermented wine with loads of fruit. We tasted the 2011 and as with cabernet franc it was still a little green and needs a bit more time to develop those light tannins into smooth fruit. Next  four different vintages of the Cuveé Vieilles Vignes all aged in old oak barrels for 10 to 11 months the 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007. 2010 was still young, the 2009 a good year with the elegance of a chinon red, 2008 gave too tight tannins still so will not develop well, 2007 leathery and more rich. Finally the Cuveé Ann d'Antan a wine aged in old oak barrels for 18 months and allowed to smooth out the tannins and enrich the fruit to cassis.

The first pic is of Karin and I with Nadia Lambert tasting in the cave. The second pic is of Karin and Roy making the most of the tasting! The final pic is me and Karin with Liz and Roy our hosts who introduced us the estate.

Yesterday Saumur appellation today Anjou appellation what a whizz and so much fun with our guests today. Martin and Catherine, and Mike and Catherine. A less than sober afternoon (them not me) first trying a Saumur Champigny ( yes I know I said Anjou country) whilst learning the basics of Loire valley wines in the wine room here at Manoir de Gourin. I did not want to deprive them of the nectar for an hour whilst I drivelled on, and then a visit to a chateau estate to try the three whites, two pinks, two reds, three bubbles, and three sweets. Wow. Also a visit to the vineyard, and a smooth run through the wine room whilst I described the wine making processes from vine to bottle.

I think they all enjoyed the wines as we came away with 30 litres of BIB and 21 bottles. A great afternoon enjoying the best part of life drinking good wine.

loirewinetoursblog – a day in the vines

Loirewinetoursblog loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

A most enjoyable day in the vines. The sort of day you dream about when thinking that you need to change your lifestyle and wind down a few notches from the hectic life in UK. Well that's what Karin and I did back in 2000 when we made the decision to get off the grinding wheel and start our wine tour business in the Loire valley in France.. Two couples joined us for our wine tour today which took in Saumur Champigny and Saumur Puy Notre Dame two very excellent village appellations on the Loire. Ian and Janet are staying with us at Manoir de Gourin as our self catering guests and Angus and Sue booked with us whilst staying near Tours and decided to take in a wine tour and  stay in Saumur for the night which made a lot of sense. We were able to pick them up at their hotel in Saumur the Ann D'Anjou this morning and  safely return them in the evening so no worries about driving.

Our morning started at the estate of Chateau de Chaintres in Saumur Champigny were we spent some time amongst the vines and then followed the trail of the wine making process from vineyard to bottle through the cellars and wine room to the tasting room. They enjoyed the selection of wines and came away with their purchases tucked in the boot.

We made our way back to Manoir de Gourin to a wonderful lunch on the terrace prepared by Karin. Charantes melon and Parma ham starter with a Saumur blanc, roasted salmon with our fresh garden beans and pototoes with a tartare and lemon cream sauce with a Caberent de Saumur pink, cheese with a Saumur rouge classic, Peaches marinated in sweet Coteaux du Layon wine and Armagnac. Totally delicious.

We then spent an hour in the wine room at Manoir with an introduction to Loire valley wines.

The afternoon was spent at the Enchantoir estate with a tour of the vineyard, wineroom and cellars before receiving a tasting of the full range of wines from Brigitte. A long day spent enjoying the wines of the Loire. What more would you want?

A hasty wine tasting to Enchantoir was arranged for our neighbour Lawman and his friend David from India.

A phone call from Lawman and a hasty rendezvous with Lawman and David a man who was involved in the fight against communist invasion of Oman back in the seventies. I worked there in the eighties and caught the back end of the war. My successor as chief Engineer in the south in Salalah was killed not long after taking over from me. I had move to Muscat the capital. It was a sad story for his family. Anyway enough of that. David was over from India and Lawman was after some wine for his 70th birthday party in September so we descended upon Pierre at Enchantoir. A goodly tasting of reds, whites and pinks ended with some 20 cases being smartly removed from the premises. A successful tasting I would say
