Our wine tourers today were given the task of comparing the taste of  Sauvignon blanc and Chenin blanc. We normally take a tasting of the Anjou red at our talk in the wine room of Manoir de Gourin which we compare with the Saumur classic red during our visit to a Saumur Vineyard thereafter. I thought we would try something different. More so because in this part of the Loire valley in the Anjou appellation Sauvignon is not an appellation grape so the still wine is made under the Vin de Pays or Indication Geographique Protegee (IGP) classification. Its a cracking Sauvignon for 4 euros ish a bottle compared to the Saumur blanc chenin grape AOP wine at 6.50 euros a bottle.

After our talk we ventured to the village appellation of Saumur Puy Notre Dame and the Saumur blanc appellation. The grapes are now tasting of some sugar with a lower acidity level so probably we will be seeing the harvest at the beginning of October if the weather stays relatively mild with not too much rain.

As we speak the weather here in the Loire valley is changeable. That’s not so bad as we have had a very long dry spell between the end of June and the start of September so we needed rain to plump out the berries and dilute a little of the mix of hard skin and juice in the berry. The berries are small with little juice and the skin is thick and leathery. Its a little bit like any fruit. If we get  a dry spell over the ripening phase the skins become very thick and the fruit does not grow very much. We have been lucky as the rains came down over the weekend on Saturday 14th September and the days since have been dull with little sun so no drying conditions. Lets hope we maintain these conditions for a week or so before the harvest starts in earnest at the end of the month and into October. This will allow the berries to bulk out a bit to balance the tannins with the sugars and acids.

We are in amongst the vines tomorrow so we shall see how the berries are doing at first hand.

The specially brewed bottle of ale

Loirewinetoursblog loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

Following the party for Lawman’s 70th birthday celebration and his present from the throng of friends of a Kayak, I suggested that he have it christened by Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge as she is experienced in such matters. We have suggested to Lawman that he calls his ship  ‘YFRONTS’ but not entirely sure of his enthusiasm for the name. All of the rest of the mahjonger crew are in favour so can’t see the problem ourselves except perhaps that he wears boxers. Maybe he wants to call it ‘BOXERS’.  Hakan, our Swedish Mahjonger, and being a man with diplomatic knowledge and experience, has agreed to take it upon himself to invite the Duchess to the port of Vaudelnay in the Loire to launch the said craft. We thought that Kate could possibly take a slight detour on her way down under. William could take George straight over whilst Kate takes time out to do a very important job here in France and then join William and George in Aussie. I think that’s a very sensible idea. Yes? We were not thinking of bubbly for the said naming but a bottle of special beer, especially brewed for the occasion at great expense, as you can see in the photo.

Sue, Howard, Lorna, Andrew, Jamie and Martin in the wine room at Manoir de Gourin

Loirewinetoursblog loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

Its that time of year when the temperature starts to fall rather quickly and so instead of a warm evening spent on the terrace at Manoir de Gourin we had to retire to the wine room for the aperitif and the dining room for supper. Never mind it was a jolly evening with six of our guests Jamie and Martin, Sue and Howard (Loire wine lovers – great), and Lorna and Andrew. The conversation flowed and we enjoyed Karin’s goats cheese starter with beetroot and lambs lettuce, Pork a la Francais main, cheese, and crepe a la caramel dur. Wines were classic Saumur blanc and rouge (ambassadors of the Loire wines no less), Cabernet de Saumur  – a sublime fruity dry pink, Coteaux du Layon  – a classic mature/noble rot cusp version with the sweet. Yum.

Here they are the mah jongers all set up and raring to go in the wine room at Manoir de Gourin (Peter is the one mucking about). It was a good session after lunch on the terrace. We had three different whites which I asked the assembled Mah jongers the grape  in each. Karin was the winner with two right. The first was a Melon de Bourgogne grape. Chateau de L’Oiseliniere Muscadet Serve et Maine sur Lie 2009. The second a Riesling grape from Castle Rock estate, Albany, Western  Australia ( a gift from one of our guests this year), and the third the great Chenin Blanc grape of Domaine de L’Enchantoir Saumur Blanc classic. Well done Karin.

A baguette machine in France?

Here we are in the Loire valley amongst the vineyards and cornfields and what do we find amongst us? A baguette dispenser. It cannot be true. We have amazing local boulangers. What are you doing France? You are stupid and completely bonkers. How does this reflect the place that millions and millions of tourists come to experience French culture and life? It’s going backwards. Its like the negative attitude towards this big part of the economy by the local French government representatives. The French have to be careful that they do not loose the positives of why tourists come to France. Otherwise it will go the direction of Spain. France needs to look carefully at the future.

Cheers.
