Our wine tourers today were given the task of comparing the taste of  Sauvignon blanc and Chenin blanc. We normally take a tasting of the Anjou red at our talk in the wine room of Manoir de Gourin which we compare with the Saumur classic red during our visit to a Saumur Vineyard thereafter. I thought we would try something different. More so because in this part of the Loire valley in the Anjou appellation Sauvignon is not an appellation grape so the still wine is made under the Vin de Pays or Indication Geographique Protegee (IGP) classification. Its a cracking Sauvignon for 4 euros ish a bottle compared to the Saumur blanc chenin grape AOP wine at 6.50 euros a bottle.

After our talk we ventured to the village appellation of Saumur Puy Notre Dame and the Saumur blanc appellation. The grapes are now tasting of some sugar with a lower acidity level so probably we will be seeing the harvest at the beginning of October if the weather stays relatively mild with not too much rain.

As we speak the weather here in the Loire valley is changeable. That’s not so bad as we have had a very long dry spell between the end of June and the start of September so we needed rain to plump out the berries and dilute a little of the mix of hard skin and juice in the berry. The berries are small with little juice and the skin is thick and leathery. Its a little bit like any fruit. If we get  a dry spell over the ripening phase the skins become very thick and the fruit does not grow very much. We have been lucky as the rains came down over the weekend on Saturday 14th September and the days since have been dull with little sun so no drying conditions. Lets hope we maintain these conditions for a week or so before the harvest starts in earnest at the end of the month and into October. This will allow the berries to bulk out a bit to balance the tannins with the sugars and acids.

We are in amongst the vines tomorrow so we shall see how the berries are doing at first hand.

Yesterday we toured in Saumur country in the Loire valley with two guests Amber and David. We spent the early afternoon with an introduction to the Loire vallley wine from Muscadet to Sancerre and all between. We tasted an Anjou rouge from 2005 to see how it has developed in the eight years and surprisingly the fruit remains albeit with a development to compoted fruitiness and some complex flavours. After the talk we visited a Saumur vineyard and inspected the Chenin blanc and Cabernet France vines. They are both starting the process budding. There is some effect from the cold wet weather with some bud deformation but generally the vines have developed well.

We visited the wine room and then tasted the full range of wines from the Saumur blanc, Suamur rouge, Saumur Puy Notre Dame, the oaked cuveés of the Blanc and rouge, the Cabernet d'Anjou and Cabernet de Saumur pinks, and finally the white, pink and red sparklings. A real treat. An enjoyable day out with Amber and David with wine maker Pierre and his wife Brigitte.

Cheers.

loirewinetoursblog – sparkling wine houses

loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

Loirewinetoursblog today highlights the joy of wine touring in the Loire valley. Yesterday we had a great day out and we experienced the fun of touring the caves of a sparkling wine house in Saumur on the river Loire in France and thereafter enjoying the tasting of the sparkling wines. Gratien and Meyer provide a great location overlooking the Loire river. It sits high on the limestone escarpment on the south bank of the river with views over the river to the north. On a lovely sunny day you may linger on the terrace and take in the views with a glass of sparkling wine.

Gratien and Meyer make both the local sparkling appellation Saumur with a white brut, dry and demi-sec, and the Loire sparkling of Cremant de Loire with white and rosé wines in brut. They have a wide selection of wines to taste so there should be one to suit any palate. Mine is the Saumur brut blanc.

The cave visit is a chance to look back into the past to see how they made the sparkling wines and the methods used in the 19th century. The tours are in English and are very informative.

Why not come along on one of our one day wine tours and take in the atmosphere of the Loire valley and its people. It is so much fun. Log onto our website www.loirewinetours.com and take a look at the reviews from past guests. They all had a great time here in the Loire and so will you.

See you soon.
