As I confirmed in my blog post on gfwineblog, the grape harvest for the sparkling Methode Traditionelle started on Monday 28 August. Ridiculously early (last year it was the 19 September) as we have had such hot dry weather over most of the summer. I popped over to an Anjou estate yesterday with some wine tour guests and witnessed the harvest of Chardonnay for the Saumur sparkling appellation. I tried the juice with the winemaker and he gave the acid level at 6.6% and the potential alcohol at 11.5% so just about right; it certainly does not need to be any more maturity. Funnily enough the winemaker missed the first day of the harvest as he was still on holiday!

So progress towards maturity continues with the warm dry weather in the Loire valley. If this remains the same conditons we should have a good vintage with lower yields. Fingers crossed.

Here is an early look at the 2017 vintage in the Loire.

Whenever the winter and spring period is warm there is always the possibility of frost damage. As it turned out we had a mild period at the start of the year with early bud growth;  then came the late frost which has resulted in some loss in the vineyards. This has been mainly where the vines are located in land where the cold air becomes static. Some vineyards have escaped any damage but in some cases up to 80% of vines have been affected. This will result in a reduction of yield at harvest time. As we move forward in time the weather has been warm and sunny so growth has been about two weeks ahead of last year. A good period of flowering in early June has resulted in a good short pollination period. This will ensure that bunches will all be around the same maturity at harvest.

Italy exported more bottled wine than any other country in the world during the first nine months of 2016 853,269,000 litres

France made the most from its exports in 2016, totalling over £3 billion for its 742,810,000 litres exported .

The average cost per litre of French bulk wine at £1.20 was nearly double that of Australia and Chile.

French vintners have recently hijacked two Spanish tankers full of wine and emptied them both of the thousands of cheap wine in protest at massive imports they say are ruining their livelihood. A group of wine militants Le Comité  d’Action Viticole or CAV claimed responsibility for the attacks which took place on January 16 and 17 in Nimes and Montpellier in south western France.

Üllo Wine Purifier

loirewineotoursblog – loirewinetours.com, loire, france

Loirewinetoursblog loirewinetoursblog.co.uk

There is a filter out there that the maker ullo says  will take out the sulphites from your wine. It’s a good idea if it works particularly if it only takes out the sulphite?

Not everyone is affected by sulphite in wine. Headaches can be caused by amines in the wine and the alcohol if you do not drink water with your wine as the French do. Alcohol dehydrates and causes headaches. When you become dehydrated your brain tissue loses water causing your brain to shrink and pull away from the skull. This triggers the pain receptors surrounding the brain, giving you a headache. Dehydration also causes your blood volume to drop which in turn lowers the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. So drink as much water as wine. A good tip is to have a glass of wine then fill the glass with water between each glass of wine. The best wines are those that are made naturally as they contain naturally occurring sulphites which reduces the need to add sulphite. So my advice is to drink organic wine cos the problem is not the sulphite but the horrible deadly chemicals that end up in the wine from spraying particularly to kill insects and disease. Do you know what is in your wine? Of course not so that’s why you should source your wine from a known supplier. Try our wines at gfwine.co.uk. Great plug. Hope helps

Pelting up the hill and down the dale on a trip through the Loire valley and then popping into a domaine on route to sample the lovely organic wines. Try our quiet roads that don’t go up and down but undulate gently and take in the landscape stretching out all around. Then relax and enjoy food and wines produced by local family run wineries. A great way of winding down for a break from the rigours of daily life.

Hey what do you know drinkers stick with a wine longer than with a partner. A survey of wine lovers shows that they stick with with their preferred variety. Pinot Grigio topped the list for british drinkers, followed by Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvgnon blanc, Rioja, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Malbec and Pinot Noir. Pinot Grigio was th top choice of women and Merlot for men. Where I ask is Cabernet franc and Chenin Blanc. We need a crusade for the grape varieties of the Loire people.
